Journey Forward: Pathways to Stability, Self-Sufficiency, and Community Integration

Journey Forward combines Acculturation Workshops, orientation services, and peer-supported learning to equip clients with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to successfully navigate life in the U.S. This program serves survivors and their families across San Diego County, addressing barriers such as limited familiarity with U.S. systems, language and cultural differences, and lack of access to trusted information.

What Is Journey Forward?

Journey Forward is a year-round program that provides free, practical, and culturally responsive education to survivors adjusting to life in the United States. Rather than offering one-time assistance, the program follows a “teach a person to fish” approach—empowering clients to navigate essential systems independently, advocate for themselves and their families, and build a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency.

Rooted in SURVIVORS’ nearly three decades of trauma-informed care, Journey Forward strengthens clients’ ability to access housing, employment, health care, education, financial systems, and community resources with confidence.

How the Program Works

Journey Forward supports clients through a structured yet flexible model that meets people where they are in their resettlement and healing journey.

1. New Client Orientation & Acculturation

All new clients are introduced to Journey Forward during intake. Orientation and acculturation sessions provide a foundational understanding of:

  • SURVIVORS’ services and how to access support

  • Community resources and service systems

  • Expectations of U.S. institutions

  • Cultural norms and practical guidance for daily life

  • Mental health services, including individual counseling and group therapy

Orientation sessions intentionally introduce mental health concepts in a culturally responsive and stigma-reducing way. Clients learn how trauma can affect the mind and body, what therapy and group services look like at SURVIVORS, and how these supports can strengthen overall wellness and stability.

As a result, orientation serves as a key engagement point across programs. More than 80% of clients who attend orientation enroll in additional services, including group therapy, mental health counseling, and ongoing Journey Forward workshops. These sessions help clients feel informed, welcomed, and prepared to engage in services and community life.

2. Monthly Acculturation & System-Navigation Workshops

SURVIVORS hosts monthly workshops in accessible, trusted community spaces. These bilingual, interactive sessions focus on real-life skills and system navigation, including:

  • Housing: tenant rights, responsibilities, and household management

  • U.S. Laws & Know Your Rights: understanding legal responsibilities and protections

  • Education: navigating schools for children and adults

  • Transportation: using public transit and understanding vehicle ownership

  • Employment: job readiness, interviews, and worker rights

  • Physical & Mental Health: wellness, mind-body connection, and coping strategies

  • U.S. Health System & Medi-Cal: accessing care and public benefits

  • Cultural Adjustment: coping with stress and adapting to new cultural norms

  • Digital Literacy: using email, internet resources, and online systems

  • Budgeting & Personal Finance: managing income, banking, and paying bills

These workshops build practical knowledge while reinforcing confidence and independence.

3. Peer-Supported Learning

Group-based learning creates safe spaces for connection and mutual support. Clients learn alongside others with shared lived experiences, reducing isolation and strengthening community bonds while practicing new skills.

4. Navigation Support & Linkage to Services

Clients who need additional assistance are connected to SURVIVORS’ trauma-informed clinicians, case managers, and program specialists for individualized, free support. This ensures that no client is left without guidance while still promoting independence.

Workshop Highlights

Journey Forward workshops are practical, interactive, and grounded in the real-life needs of survivors adjusting to life in the United States. Below are examples of core workshops offered throughout the year:

Housing Navigation
Clients learn how the U.S. housing system works, including tenant rights and responsibilities, how to read a lease, communicate with landlords, and safely use household appliances and products. This workshop helps prevent housing instability and supports safe, independent living.

Employment & Worker Rights
Participants explore how to search for jobs, prepare resumes, practice interviews, and understand workplace expectations. The session also covers worker rights and responsibilities, empowering clients to advocate for themselves and maintain stable employment.

U.S. Laws & Know Your Rights
This workshop provides essential information about U.S. laws related to daily life, including family safety, substance use, and civil rights. Clients learn how to protect themselves, understand consequences, and know what to do if their rights are violated—regardless of immigration status.

Health & Wellness (Physical and Mental Health)
Clients learn how physical and mental health are connected, how trauma can impact the body, and practical wellness strategies to support healing. This session reduces stigma around mental health and encourages proactive self-care.

Digital Literacy & Financial Skills
Participants build foundational skills such as setting up email, navigating online systems for appointments and benefits, understanding paychecks, budgeting, and paying bills. These skills are essential for employment, healthcare access, and daily independence.
